Mazatlan personal offshore report
The weather in Mazatlan for the winter of 2007 was unseasonably cold for this part of Mexico in December and part of January. With daytime highs reaching only 65 degrees farhenheit on some days, some better, some very windy. With mild days mixed in. A few tourist who have been visiting for 25 years claimed it was the coldest they had ever seen this region of Mexico. The first day offshore was very windy and rough which made it impossible to keep the baits running right. The only time the baits were working right was when the boat headed withe the wind. We worked a couple of Marlin but none would take the bait.We only caught one yellowfin tuna about 8lbs. The day before our second trip we headed to the Marina to check the fishing. The weather was warmer and the wind calmed down. All the boats caught 3 to 4 Marlin each and the Pangas caught Marlin as well ! The next day we headed out the morning was cool the wind moderate. As the day progressed it became very comfortably warm the wind picked picked up some. As I watched the baits I saw a sailfish come in very agressively nozeing the bait, but as we dropped it back to him he took it, but would not hang on and we did not get him hooked up. We saw several Marlin we worked them we had partial hook ups but nothing solid. Then we worked a group of 3 and hooked a nice 180 pound striped Marlin John Weflen of Arizona took him. This was Johns first marlin and after a very hard and long 1hour plus fight he managed to bring him boat side. The next Marlin hook up was small maybe 90 to 100 lbs that fight lasted 30 to 40 minutes tops. We saw other fish as did the other boats they caught Marlin and sailfish as well. Then we saw a nice fish probably 200 lbs or better. We worked the baits in front of that Marlin I thought that was going to take one. we went a very short distance and there must have been a group because a different fish grabbed one of our baits. This was a nice Marlin he fought hard would not tire. I could not get any line on him for a good 30 to 40 minutes at least ! We had to back the boat toward him several times, finally this fish began to tire. At first I could only gain a couple inches at a time then a couple feet and finally me and the Marlin began to toss back and forth to the boat away from the boat. When we had the fish boatside we could see it was not as big as Johns fish maybe 160 lbs but every bit as strong it was a nice fight none the less. Then we set the baits back out and it was not long before we hooked another sailfish. John once again decided to take that one and after a fairly short 20 minute fight we had him boat side. It was a nice sail fish and time to head back in. The total tally 3 Marlin 1 sailfish not a bad tally considerind the weather we had planned on doing some bottom fishing but the bottom fishing was terrible so we decided to pass on it. With all the blowing wind the rooster fish were also scatterd with more in the boat channels than not so that was out as well.As last report the weather has improved along with the fishing
